Cuff Links

Styles of cufflinks

Cufflinks today are designed for single or double (french) cuffs that either are pinched together or are barrel style where one cuff overlaps the other. Most commonly they 'kiss' or are pinched together.

Although the design of the face of the cufflink can vary widely there are relatively few common styles. There is the traditional double panel where two decorated panels are joined by a post or chain, where the less visible side is small enough to fit through the cuff hole, or is separate and joined from the other side. These along with links of brightly coloured knotted silk are in some ways still aligned with the historical pre button era and are often irritatingly difficult to fasten in a hurry.

More common today is the swivel bar and post with a flat decorated face on one side.

Precious metals have never gone out of style along with enamel which was perfected in the late 19th century and exploited by Art Nouveau inspired designers like Cartier and Tiffany at the turn of the 20th century.

More recently french cuffs have made a dramatic come back and along with them, the public at large, have rediscovered the cufflink as a fashion accessory.

Choosing a cufflink

Like any aspect of fashion there are a huge number of variables to consider. Foremost are function, style and price. If you are looking to buy cufflinks for the first time then chances are that you have a specific event to wear them to. Although when your hands are at your sides the cufflink is a long way from your tie or shirt, when you touch your face which we apparently do, far more often than we realize, the cufflink comes into focus and needs to compliment or contrast whatever is happening up there. If it is a formal affair keep the cufflinks classy but understated, if you are the epitome of bespoke then that should also be reflected in your choice of cufflinks. Shop around and compare when you are looking for something original or limited edition, but when you find something you know you love and will wear for many years to come, it is well worth paying as much as you can afford.
